Orioles - Nationals

Post by pat3ck » Sat Jan 06, 2018 2:52 am

Baltimore Orioles send:

2B Jonathan Schoop (MLB)
CL Jefry Rodriguez (AAA - Norfolk Tides)
CL Jody Davis (A - Delmarva Shorebirds)

Washington Nationals send:

CL Greg Holland (MLB)
2B Nick Franklin (MLB)

We made this deal to acquire a formidable offensive threat and a very athletic middle infielder. Holland has an expiring contract and we may not have the money to extend him after this season. Franklin has been good in his short stint with us last year but Schoop is a better defender. Also, we got a couple of good prospects in return. Lastly, we'll save about $4M from this deal. We could just cut our scouting budget to acquire a short-term closer in the FA.

Orioles confirm this deal.

Orioles Rationale:

it was tough decision to move Jonathan Schoop coming off a career year, but with the loss of Al Albuquerque to free agency, we needed a stopper in the bullpen and Greg Holland fits the bill.

Orioles management were unsure if Schoop's 35 homer explosion was a indication of future results or a one-year aberration, although we will miss his Gold Glove caliber defense. We have always liked Franklin and feel his ability to get on base will make him an asset, even if he never matches Schoop in the power department or in the field. That being said the Orioles scouts feel Frankin is a solid defender. turns a good double play and is capable of playing everyday.

We had a bunch of similar players in the organization to Rodriguez and Davis and although we liked them a lot, felt they were expendable if the return was a premium closer.
